Educational & Life Long Learning Investment Opportunities

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you'll go.”- Dr. Seuss

The Connecticut Parent’s Union is hosting the Raising a Family of Readers Summer Parent Express Tour to help support children, parents and community efforts to improve literacy levels, with emphasis on struggling readers, in the neediest school districts and communities throughout Connecticut.

The Challenge: As of 2013, the State Department of Education has identified 350 Connecticut schools not making adequate yearly progress in the core subjects of reading and math, at the whole school level, which translates to about 200,000 students, a majority of whom are of color and attend low performing schools.

Furthermore, studies show students can lose up to 25 percent of their reading achievement over the summer. This reading loss is cumulative. Researchers concluded that two-thirds of the 9th grade reading achievement gap can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities during elementary school. This achievement level is a huge determinant of whether students stay in school and follow a college-preparatory track. (summerlearning.org)

One Solution: In partnership with community support services, volunteers, literacy and family engagement professionals, using interactive activities and applied experiences, we will emphasize to parents and the community the importance of learning how to read. We will work with all concerned to help create healthy habits and home based activities that foster lifelong learning experiences with reading as the foundation.

The Raising a Family of Readers Summer Parent Express Tour will visits at-risk locations, throughout Connecticut, and host the following activities from June 15th - August 27th of 2013:

Raising Readers Stops include: Summer Food Service Programs (free breakfast & lunch), early childhood and community centers, schools, shelters, community centers, and housing complexes.

Raising Readers Activities include: On-site reading assessments, parent engagement/empowerment & financial literacy workshops, circle time read-along with a child’s favorite character, individualized support with literacy professionals for parents and students.

For Parents & Children: Books and back 2 school supply give away, Financial Literacy workshops with $25.00 to begin a College Savings account for kids incentive (all incentives age and need appropriate)
